Grand Rapids, Michigan, January 14, 2026 – The Michigan Supreme Court has reappointed Judge Angela T. Ross as Chief Judge of the 61st District Court for a two-year term effective January 1, 2026. Judge Ross was first appointed to the bench in 2022 by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and named Chief Judge in 2024.
Under her leadership, the Court has prioritized initiatives that promote transparency, accountability, and equal treatment for all who appear before the court. Judge Ross has been recognized for her strong commitment to excellence in court administration, expanding access to justice, and fostering public confidence through fairness and transparency.
“I am honored to continue serving in this role and grateful to my colleagues for their support and dedication to Grand Rapids,” said Judge Ross. “We are working each day to build a court that is efficient, accessible, and rooted in the principles of equal justice. As Chief Judge, I will continue working to make the court not just a place of justice, but a partner in our community’s well-being.”
In addition to her general jurisdiction caseload, Judge Ross presides over the 61st District’s Felony Sobriety Court—an intensive, evidence-based treatment court for high-risk individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Under her leadership, the program has expanded its focus on accountability, behavioral health coordination, and long-term recovery support.
The 61st District Court serves the City of Grand Rapids and handles a wide range of matters, including criminal misdemeanors, civil infractions, felony preliminary exams, landlord-tenant disputes, and small claims cases. The Court is committed to accessible justice and innovation in public service, offering a range of specialty programs and alternative sentencing options to better meet the needs of the community. The court is comprised of six elected judges, an attorney magistrate, and a hardworking and dedicated support staff.
