General civil cases involve lawsuits between two or more parties seeking money damages, injunctions, or equitable relief. Claims of $25,000 or less are handled in District Court. Claims greater than $25,000 are handled in the Circuit Court.

Any person may inspect, at no charge, any case record or information contained in those records unless access is restricted by statute or court rule. Case records are to be reviewed at the public service counter. The court will provide a limited number of copies of documents (a total of 20 pages) at a cost of $2.00 for the first page and $1.00 per page for subsequent pages of the request for copies. Copies of documents in storage will be at a cost of $2.00 per page. Requests for more than 20 total copies of documents will be accommodated within a reasonable amount of time.
Venue
The venue is the jurisdiction in which court proceedings may be instituted. In most cases, venue is proper where the defendant (1) resides, (2) has a place of business or conducts business, or (3) if the defendant is a corporation, where the registered office is located.
The plaintiff is responsible for filing in the proper venue. The 61st District Court jurisdiction is the City of Grand Rapids.

Please call the court or email us at civil@grcourt.org to obtain a date and time for your motions. Multiple motions are scheduled before the judge on the same date and time. The judge will choose the order in which the motions will be heard.
There is a $20 filing fee for all motions. If two motions are filed together on the same case, there is just one $20 fee.
