GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan, October 5, 2026 – The 61st District Court is launching Night Court, a new virtual small claims docket that expands access to the court beyond traditional business hours. Night Court is held once a month, starting at 5:00 p.m. Magistrate Bria Adderley-Williams will preside over the docket.
The small claims division resolves money disputes of up to $7,000. Parties represent themselves, and cases are heard by the Court’s attorney magistrate. Cases must arise in the City of Grand Rapids, or the defendant must live or do business in the city.
“Access to justice should reflect the realities of people’s daily lives,” said Chief Judge Angela T. Ross. “We are excited to offer Virtual Night Court so residents can resolve small claims disputes without a lawyer and with fewer barriers related to work, transportation, and family responsibilities.”
All Night Court hearings will be conducted virtually by Zoom, so parties can participate from home or another convenient location. The evening hours are intended to serve people who have difficulty attending during the workday due to work, transportation, caregiving, or other obligations.
Parties whose cases are eligible will be notified, and those scheduled for Night Court will receive a notice explaining how to join the virtual hearing and upload evidence in advance. Participants will need an internet-connected computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone. The Court encourages participants to test their connection beforehand using Zoom’s free test meeting.
