61st District Court Connects with Community at Grand Rapids’ 175th Birthday Celebration

June 10, 2025

The 61st District Court joined residents, families, and community partners to celebrate Grand Rapids’ 175th birthday on Saturday, June 7, at Rosa Parks Circle. The free, family-friendly celebration transformed the downtown plaza into a hub of live music, games, historical exhibits, and of course, birthday cake, as part of the city’s official dodransbicentennial events.

The Court’s booth stayed busy from start to finish. Staff served fresh popcorn and bottled water, handed out miniature gavels and notebooks, and invited visitors to drop a chip down a Plinko board to determine their prize. Lines formed throughout the afternoon, giving court staff a steady stream of opportunities to answer questions, explain court services, and talk about how the justice system fits into daily life in Grand Rapids. City Manager Mark Washington stopped by the table as well, underscoring the strong partnership between court leadership and City Hall.

Chief Judge Angela Ross hosted the Plinko game for much of the event, engaging hundreds of residents of all ages. Between drops of the chip, she exchanged quick conversations with parents, kids, and long-time neighbors, using the lighthearted game as a starting point for more serious topics like access to the courts and problem-solving programs. The activity quickly became a crowd favorite, demonstrating that a court presence can be both informative and approachable.

For the 61st District Court, participating in the city’s 175th birthday party was about more than celebration. Events like this help build trust, reduce barriers, and remind the public that their local courts are staffed by people who live and work in the same community they serve. The Court looks forward to future opportunities to connect with residents as Grand Rapids continues its year-long 175th anniversary observance.
